Sojourners Adult Bible Fellowship

This is huge IMHO. Please read the article at the following link:

Some “seeker-friendly” churches who have oriented their worship services towards non-Christians for the past three decades have discovered that this church philosophy does not GROW Christians. This is what many have been saying for a long time. The seeker-friendly church may experience great attendance and collect many millions of dollars, but it is a “mile wide / inch thick” phenomenon. Lots and lots of people… very, very shallow. Thousands of little plants without any root.
Christians, true Christians, those whose hearts have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, LOVE to study Christian doctrine. To learn Christian doctrine is to learn about and to love the one who has saved us — Jesus Christ. When we really love someone we want to know all about them. For the Christian that means biblical, docrtinal, theological study.
You’ll notice in the article that on a previous occasion when the seeker-friendly church attempted to teach doctrine the attendance dropped. We must respond, “So be it.” Worship is about Christians worshipping. Worship is about Christians adoring God through the passionate study of His word. Worship is not about making people feel tingly all over because God wants to satisfy their lust for a bigger home, a beautiful body, a more lucrative career, and a fatter investment portfolio. Worship is about GOD. Worship is focused and centered on God — not God stroking the egos of self-centered men and women.
A wise pastor/teacher recently said that there are two problems with the seeker-friendly aproach:
1) There is a false assumption that the masses of unregenerate mankind are interested in God. They are not. Seeker-friendly churches sweep them into the pews on Sunday morning by entertaining them with something other than the counsel of God found in His word. True evangelism must most often take place in our homes and workplace. It is there that people see us live the Good News of Jesus Christ. Begging people to “accept Jesus” because he wants to “bless them” is not the Gospel.
2) There is also a faulty understanding in the primary, biblical purposes for the Christian gathering. The Christian assembly is for the true worship of God and the edification of the church. (Notice it is edification of the church — those “made new” in Christ.)
Are these harsh words? I hope not. These are beautiful, encouraging words. Think of it? Christendom focused on Christ. What a radical concept!
